Lead IT Moving from Technical Leader to People Leader Fast eBook Sharron Spratt

This book is a good, easy read for anyone who's new to management from a prior technical role. Corporate life seems to be that when you've been around long enough and know your stuff, you should go up a rung or two to a management role. But it's often not a natural, easy step to make. Managing people is a lot different to managing networks and systems, and this book goes through all the typical scenarios a manager finds themselves in and how to best handle them. Don't be fooled by the motorbike cover. This isn't a book that would only appeal to dudes; it's relevant for anyone - male or female - motorbike rider, or not.

Lead IT Moving from Technical Leader to People Leader Fast eBook Sharron Spratt Reviews

This was a great, informative read. It's all too easy to get pulled into the day to day running of the business, all good stuff dealing with staff & operational issues, yet often distracting from the bend in the road or worse still the huge pothole waiting to unsettle your balance!
This a great read for new and experienced managers / leaders who are dealing with more and more complex issues in IT, at a pace that's faster than ever.
Take the time to read and learn some fantastic techniques that will hone your peripheral vision whilst you keep an eye on the road ahead.
This book is a great practical 'How To' for those who are wanting to grow their leadership ability and build a reputation as one of those rare managers in I.T who has both technical AND people skills. I highly recommend it and can see this book as a great reference to go back to time and again to resolve problems as they arise. The stories are gems!

This is certainly an unusual book – linking motor cycles to how you lead a team – until you start reading it! Even if you don’t ride a motor bike, you have an idea of what it would be like. Then it becomes an illuminating metaphor for the challenges you face leading a group of people. Thinking back to the challenges I faced myself when I first took on a group, I have to say I wish I’d had this book then. And thinking about what I’ve learned leading and managing over the years, I still get value from this.
It starts out fairly simple, basic, but then as you read on you get more and more examples and concepts well explained and laid out. Just reading the example about a Vision for weather forecasting, gave me an idea for my own company. Sometimes the bike analogy makes an idea really clear, sometimes she validates it with Neuroscience. Pushing for actions after each section is very helpful. Act while the idea is hot!
The book ends with the nuts and bolts of communicating, best and worst, and of selecting and managing a team. And then a review of the whole book, getting you to think again – and I did! Great book, 5 stars.
I was interested to see what motorbikes had to do with leadership. The book has some great leadership ideas, and deals with the issues in a conceptual way. At the same time it provides tools which are practical and actionable. I found it most useful and it gave me quite a few tips that I fully intend to put into practice. This is not only useful for I.T. people, but for all leaders.
If you want to learn about how to lead a team that is NOT boring theory give this book a try. I have never owned a motorcycle but found the mix of real life work and motorcycling stories very engaging. It is very clearly explained and easy to read.(5 stars)

A very well written and motivational book that can help not only the corporate achiever but the average person gain an insight as to how to become a people leader not just settle to be a follower. I have personally recommended this book to several of my business associates and look forward to a second book.
This is a great book on a very important topic. It provides very practical guidance to those making the challenging transition from technical expert to leader. So often, technical experts are thrown into the role of team leader without having had the benefit of training or guidance. This book provides them with just the guidance they need. I particularly liked the focus on self awareness and found that the real life case studies and links to motor cycle riding brought the rules and lessons to life.
